Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
